The Samantha Bearkat mystery: Authority is constructed & contextual (Workshop E3)

In this discussion-based workshop, students will learn how information is created and distributed, particularly in online environments—including social media, podcasts, blogs, and academic journal articles. We will discuss the ways in which knowledge is shared and understood by different fields and groups, as well as examine how citations can be part of a conversation.

Session Objectives: 

  1. Students will learn about the information cycle and apply it to their own information consumption habits. 

  1. Students will learn how “unseen” forces such as algorithms, AI, advertisements/promos, “echo chambers,” and censorship affect how information is spread or limited. 

  1. Students will begin to understand how information in different academic fields compares to the online information environment.
